Staff Picks for Invertebrates

Guernica Editions, May 2026.

Welcome to Russell Books: an indie bookstore on an island in the Pacific Ocean, where anemones dispense life advice and staff recommend books to mollusks. Staff Picks for Invertebrates, inspired by the poet’s experiences over the last decade working in a large bookstore, is love letter to books, and people who love books. In these poems, divisions between human and non-human fall away. Staff and customers, swallows and starfish, the store itself and the books that live inside: all are part of the same family and dwell in the same fragile, radiant world.

Staff Picks for Invertebrates cover: an underwater scene that blends into the front windows of a bookstore, as though the store is at the bottom of the sea. A starfish is stuck to the inside of the bookstore's window.
intertidal: poems from the littoral zone

Raven Chapbooks, 2022

Winner of the Raven Chapbooks award, 2022.

In her new chapbook, intertidal: poems for the littoral zone, Zoe Dickinson has written a stunning collection of breathtaking poems about the precious shoreline of the Pacific West Coast. Not only are these poems lyrically descriptive, but they are also scientifically accurate, knowledgeable and edifying. This collection is heartbreakingly sympathetic. How much Zoe Dickinson loves this place: “tiny sandlances touch up / small silver mouths / round as rain / kiss the surface tension. . .” The whole world around her is delicate, frangible, on the fathomless brink, and always, in her words, beautiful and vastly worthwhile.

These poems, small stops strung along the daily commute, bring presence to the dead time, the empty time, the blank space between departure and arrival.
